No Mass eBook Mel Coben
This story is, in a nutshell, an autobiographical description of how one man discovers a sensational new technology and then develops and uses that technology over a period of a few years.Have you ever wondered what would happen if you or someone you knew accidentally figured out something revolutionary? We're all well aware that many major scientific discoveries happen by chance, and this book takes that concept and runs with it.
Told in autobiographical fashion, this is the story of a pretty regular guy who stumbles upon a wondrous technological discovery. The protagonist -- who, like many Americans of his age (he's a WWII veteran), possessed a basic understanding of electronics/mechanics -- discovers how to manipulate the weight (or mass) of a wide variety of objects.
He begins experimenting with his discovery. At first he simply has fun; later he actually starts becoming a Good Samaritan when he comes across various people in emergency situations and is able to help them with his special technology and his clear, analytical mind. He saves lives on several occasions.
This story's major strength is also its major weakness: it is told in a highly believable fashion; in chronological order and without a major sustained source of tension or challenge to be overcome. In other words, it lacks the "plot arc" that we typically crave from any work of fiction in order for us to be able to enjoy a feeling of tension-building and then ultimate resolution of that tension.
Nonetheless, because the story is highly accurate regarding it's description of a certain corner of America (i.e. New Jersey/with some mention of Manhattan and NY) during a certain period of history (before the advent of the internet); because the story is short; and most of all because of the unique premise of the story, IT IS STILL A WORTHWHILE READ FOR THE RIGHT READER
The Pros of this book:
1. as mentioned above, it has a very unique underlying premise that is diligently developed so that there are no major gaps in the "logic of the story"
2. told with a unique, uniform voice with an enjoyable sense of understated humor
3. the "good deeds" performed by the protagonist are enjoyable to read about
4. the story and the protagonist feel very, very real in many respects
The Cons of this book:
1. as mentioned above, it lacks a "big challenge" or "big villain" so there is no strand of tension that runs throughout the whole length of the story; rather, after a certain point, the story becomes more a series of smaller anecdotes about various ways the protagonist uses his new technology to his advantage and to help people. SO, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A "GOOD GUY VS. BAD GUY" TYPE OF STORY THAT HAS A CLIMACTIC ENDING, THEN STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORY.
2. the book is short, which would be fine, BUT I FEEL THIS BOOK SHOULD BE PRICED BETWEEN 1.99 AND 2.99
3. the ending not only lacks a climax, but is anti-climactic because it devolves into a series of "what ifs" postulating the possible good uses of this wondrous technology. The "what ifs" are interesting, BUT THEY COULD BE PLACED IN AN APPENDIX TO THE BOOK SO THEY WOULD BE SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE STORY, WHICH WOULD MAKE FOR A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE
4. at one point, Native Americans are referred to as "Indian," which on the one hand might be perfectly logical and consistent in keeping with the protagonist's age and background, but on the other hand seemed anachronistic and just plain wrong because at the end of the story we learn the story is being told looking back from the year 2006
5. the uses of this new technology become too focused on travel and, in particular, air travel. Many other interesting possibilities could have been explored with such an incredibly powerful technology.
All in all, this book is interesting and contains the kernel of a unique concept that a good Hollywood screenwriter could build a good movie upon.
It should be priced in line with a Kindle Single, otherwise IT IS OVERPRICED FOR IT'S LENGTH.
This book, as written, I doubt would interest many people younger than 30 or 35 (unless, of course, they have an intense interest in mechanics/science/engineering). It moves too slow; is basically a series of anecdotes; lacks a typical plotline; is really like being inside the head of a married family man. We learn that he is now 83 (in 2006) so during the main action of this story he must've been somewhere between 30's to 40's. I KNOW THAT IT'S HARD TO GENERALIZE, BUT I WOULD SAY THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT AN INTERESTING BOOK FOR TEENAGE READERS.
NONETHELESS, this book deserves 5-stars because, for the right reader, it will be interesting, clever, unique, and worthwhile assuming that it gets re-priced as suggested above.
