BUILD AND CONVERT AIRFIX MILITARY MODELS Tom Cole 9781906959203 Books
I was disappointed by this book. I purchased it with the thought that it would have scale plans, detailed descriptions, images and templates/or the details of after-market modification kits needed for each variation presented. There are only eight scale plans, of the base vehicles, for the 34 kit articles of over fifty different vehicles/ types of equipment written about.Product details

BUILD AND CONVERT AIRFIX MILITARY MODELS Tom Cole 9781906959203 Books Reviews
This is a must have for small scale model builders and fans of Airfix kits.
But BEWARE this book only cost $38.50. It is not made of gold. It is due in the USA shortly, and you can buy it from good Book Shops here or abroad for 1/3 of what this guy is asking.
For a lot of older AFV modellers the old Airfix magazine spawned a generation of modellers who attempted their first conversions based on the wonderful articles it contained on the conversion of Airfix kits. In that age these conversions were the only way to get even mainstream WW2 vehicles for your collection and whilst a lot of these wouldn't satisfy the instant gratification brigade of today they were good fun and a good grounding in simple construction, conversion and fabrication techniques. SAM publications has released a superb title devoted to the subject of converting and modifying the large and diverse range of Airfix 1/76th / HO/OO range of military subjects including their latest releases.
The book features 52 kits/conversions in 128 pages and is supported by colour photos showing the various stages of conversion and the finished products. The subjects are mainly World War two but there is a large section devoted to Post War and a pair of WW1 Conversions based on the venerable and aging Mk 1 Male kit they released back in the 60's.
The conversions range from simple modification to more complex rebuilds with fabricated parts and don't take themselves too seriously. These are all conversions within the reach of every day modellers without the need to spend three times the cost of an expensive base kit. The text is easy to follow and quite concise but adequate in scope. Unfortunately unlike the original articles these are not supported by the drawings like those from the sixties and seventies in Airfix Magazine. Regardless these appear to be fun builds and to me look like a good way to shake of the modelling blues. They would be a great way to introduce newer modellers to the hobby at very little costs given the bargain prices for a lot of Airfix Military Kits.
I thoroughly recommend this kit as either a guide to follow, a nostalgic look at modelling or a chance to pick up new skills. I see this as particularly appealing to war gamers looking to fill holes in their armies. It would make a great gift for the younger modeller starting out or the older modeller who isn't as serious as they used to be. Do yourself a favour and get a copy even if just for the nostalgia value; I doubt you will be disappointed.
Its a nice but but I thought that it was going to be the old airfix model mags on how to build and convert there models ,but it is still a good book to have thanks
